Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all having a fantastic start to the year! I’m Aivin Saji, your MDXSU President, and I’m excited to update you on what we’ve been working on to improve your experience at Middlesex.

Enhancing Student Employability

  • On-Campus Job Growth: Working with MDX Works and other university departments, we’ve successfully increased on-campus job opportunities by 24%, helping more students gain valuable work experience.
  • Part-Time Employability Fair: We’re bringing internal and external employers to campus so you can connect with potential employers and explore part-time roles that fit around your studies.
  • Refined Hiring Process: Together with MDX Works, we’re exploring ways to invite companies on campus to interview students for open positions, streamlining the path from application to job offer.
  • Mentorship/Volunteering Program: We’re also looking to launch a program across various university departments so students can gain practical experience through mentorship and volunteering. This proposal has already been presented to the Board of Governors and the Trustee Board, and we’re awaiting final approval from MDX Works. We’ll start with a pilot volunteer team to get the ball rolling.

Advocacy and Policy Impact

  • Parliament Visit: I had the privilege of meeting MP David Pinto-Duschinsky to discuss key student concerns, from the rising cost of living to housing reforms and employment support.
  • Regional NUS Lead: I was recently chosen as a regional NUS Lead to strengthen partnerships with other London-based Student Union Presidents (London Sabs), ensuring our voices are united on big issues.
  • Better Travel Schemes: My fellow sabbatical officers (Mihita & Mohit) and I are looking into ways to work with the Mayor on improving travel options and rates for students, aiming to make commutes more affordable.

Increasing Student Engagement

  • Engagement Boost: We’ve seen a rise in the number of students getting involved in events, societies, and union-led activities—thank you for being part of it!
  • Cultural Day: We’re planning a Cultural Day where students can celebrate their backgrounds through performances and activities and end the evening with a DJ night and drinks

Looking Ahead

I’m committed to ensuring your voices continue to guide every decision. If you have ideas or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m always here to listen and help.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to working with you all to make this year even better!

Best regards,
Aivin Saji
MDXSU President
