Celebrating Black Excellence: Black History (More Than a Month) at MDXSU
Every year, the month of October marks a significant period of reflection, celebration, and education all over the world. It's a time when communities come together to recognize the incredible contributions, struggles, and achievements of Black people throughout history. At MDXSU, we believe that Black History cannot be reduced to a month. With a thriving black community at Middlesex University, we're celebrating Black excellence all day, every day. October is just another opportunity for us to shout about our incredible Black students & staff.
Why Black History Month?
Black History Month isn't just a cultural celebration; it's a vital opportunity for people of all backgrounds to learn about the often-overlooked contributions of Black individuals. It's a reminder of the ongoing fight for racial equality and justice, and a chance to highlight the cultural heritage that makes the world a more vibrant place.
The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the United States. It was established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a historian who recognized the lack of recognition for Black achievements. Initially, it was just a week, known as "Negro History Week," but over the years, it evolved into a month-long celebration. In the UK, Black History Month began in London in 1987 and has since spread throughout the country.

MDXSU's Commitment to Black Students
At Middlesex University Students' Union (MDXSU), we're proud to join in this celebration. But for us, Black History Month is not just about reflecting on the past; it's about shaping the future.
On June 1st, 2020, in response to the global call for racial justice sparked by the Black Lives Matter movement, we made a series of pledges. These commitments were designed to ensure that we support our Black communities at Middlesex University and in the wider society.
One of our most significant actions has been the extensive research we've undertaken into the Black Students' Experience (BSE) at Middlesex. For seven months, we engaged with the Black community through surveys and focus groups. The result? A comprehensive report with findings on the existing BSE and recommendations for its improvement. You can read the full report here.
We're dedicated to implementing these recommendations and creating an environment where Black students can thrive. Our commitment doesn't end with Black History Month; it's an ongoing mission to ensure that Black students make the most out of their time at Middlesex University.
Black History Events
In the spirit of Black History Month, we are proud to present these three exciting events (so far) that celebrate culture, diversity, and unity.
As part of our commitment to supporting Black students and fostering an inclusive environment at Middlesex University, these events aim to bring our community together. AND these events are totally FREE! So register and add them to your calendar now before the spots get full.
This Black History Month, let's celebrate Black excellence, educate ourselves about Black history and culture, and continue our journey towards a more inclusive and equitable future. We invite all members of the MDX community to join us in this celebration, to learn, and to contribute to a brighter, more equitable world. Together, we can make a difference.
