Following the success of the first MDXSU Residential last September, the first of it's kind for Middlesex and for Students' Unions nationwide, Middlesex Students' Union this week decamped to the Essex for the first residential of 2015/16.
The three-day residential was attended by over a hundred students who are either currently involved in the Students' Union or are looking to find out more, including Student Voice Leaders, society committees, and our MDXSU events and Welcome Desk team.
The first day of the MDXSU Residential, held at Gilwell Park Scout Centre, began with a presentation from our elected Student Officers, who shared their plans for the coming year, followed by an adrenaline-filled afternoon of activities, from archery and aerial trekking to raft-building.
That evening, we were joined by Middlesex University's Vice Chancellor, Tim Blackman. The new Vice Chancellor, who joined Middlesex in July, delivered an inspirational presentation on his plans for Middlesex University, and chatted to students about their experiences at the university.
The remaining two days included sports, workshops, activities and lively debates. Society committees learned how best to organise events, promote their projects and lead their societies; our new Team MDXSU found out more about the freshers' events that they will be instrumental in making a success; and we witnessed some very hard fought tug-of-wars...
During the residential, several sessions were dedicated to launching MDXSU's campaigns for the year. The four main campaigns discussed centred on tackling lad culture on campus and beyond; the Syrian refugee crisis; the cutting of maintenance grants by the government; and the troubling state of housing in the UK.
The campaign workshops featured in-depth discussions, poignant points and interesting ideas, which will play a key role in shaping the campaigns this year. Click on the links above or keep an eye on our website for further information on how you can get involved.
Rounding up the residential were Katie, Adam, Andy and Sophie - students who have worked with MDXSU as Student Voice Leaders, society leaders and members of Team MDXSU - who reflected on their experiences over the previous few days. All four talked about making new friends, learning new things, finding out more about what the Students' Union offer, and leaving newly eager and excited for the coming year.
The idea behind the residential is to empower, inspire and develop students at Middlesex, giving them the confidence and skills to lead and create change, both during their time at university and beyond.
The impact of the training given, ideas discussed and friendships made at the residential is not just limited to those who attended. By giving these students the confidence and capability to become inspiring society committees, Student Voice Leaders, volunteers, interns and MDXSU staff, we are helping them to create a better community and wider opportunities for the entire student body.
