Hot water fee dropped on campus

Year on year, Middlesex students have consistently highlighted the need for better quality and better value food here on campus, leading MDXSU to rank it as a top priority for campaign action. After identifying where the campus food provision falls short in comparison with other institutions and highlighting these findings at numerous top level meetings, we are delighted to be able to announce the following major improvement:

The 80p charge for a cup of hot water has now been dropped entirely. Last academic year the student newspaper ran a front-page campaign against this 80p charge, which lead to them reducing the cost to 50p. Now we have achieved our goal of making hot water completely free to Middlesex students across all campus outlets!

Aman Siddiqi welcomed the announcement saying that ‘when the student newspaper ran its story exposing the cost of hot water on campus I think we were all surprised and whilst the reduction to 50p was welcome but paying for water, which is a basic right, still felt wrong. I am delighted that following negotiations over the summer we have been able to convince Chartwells to totally waive this cost. It is a really great gesture that they have listened to student feedback and have acted. I for one will be pleased to be able to mix up a Lemsip for free over the coming weeks as the inevitable freshers' flu hits my immune system!’

The next steps in our campaign will focus on pushing for a fresh veg stall on campus and maintaining a pressure to reduce prices. To learn more about these initiatives and contribute to achieving further change please email MDXSU’s President, Aman at A.Siddiqi@mdx.ac.uk!
