Student life is about more than just your degree - it’s about the whole university experience. And while this may well include a bewildering array of nightlife options, a mania for Facebooking your wordcounts and perhaps even temporarily moving into the library, there are some seriously fun extra-curricular options out there for those of you who want to stretch yourselves in new and rewarding ways!
Plus, if you take every opportunity that comes to you, you’ll find that it’s the random skills you pick up that will land you the job when you graduate...
To give you a head start we’ve listed our top 8 ways to win at being a student here at Middlesex!
1. Become a Student Voice Leader
This is a great way to make Middlesex life even better! If you become a Student Voice Leader, you’ll represent your course - meaning that you’ll be the person your coursemates entrust their views and concerns with. In turn, your tutor will listen to you when you relay the changes that your coursemates bring up.
You’ll also be a key player at termly conferences where you’ll meet other students, take part in campus-wide projects, and pick up transferable skills! Get the Voice Leadership lowdown here
2. Become a School Voice Leader
Want to go a step further? You can represent your whole school! You get to support Student Voice Leaders, lead on key projects and get to know more senior staff in your school.
The school of Art & Design is still looking for a School Voice Leader this year – it’s a great opportunity to use creative problemsolving skills and help more students in your school access the opportunities that are available to them at uni! Find out how to get elected here
3. Join a society
Maybe you want to meet new people; maybe you want to learn a new skill; maybe you want to have fun. you can do all three simply by becoming a member of a society that brings together people who feel passionate about the same things you do!
If you join or found a society you can also help lead it, by taking up a committee position. There are LOADS of societies to choose from, and you can be a member in as many as you like (link). Can’t find one you like? Email us and we can help you set it up.
4. Liberate yourself
If you’re a woman, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender), a black student or a disabled student you may well find that university will be a place where you not only have space to reflect upon any sexism, racism, homophobia and ableism that you’ve encountered - it will also be a place where you feel supported to do something about it!
If you’ve been looking forward to meeting like-minded people and pushing for positive changes, come along to one or all of our liberations assemblies. You'll make friends, go to inspiring events, hear guest speakers and make the Middlesex community even better!
5. Empower yourself
Are you energised about how the government can change your life for the better - or for worse? You can make a difference to the political landscape here in the UK by helping out with our ‘Road to 2015’ General Election Campaign simply by getting students to consider whether they are being represented - and if so, by whom.
Students have a loud voice, but it’s up to you to make sure that everyone who goes to Middlesex gets heard! Email Aman Siddiqi to be looped into our ambitious plans for May 2015.
6. Student Media
Want to see your ideas in print around campus? Can think of some great playlists to share with everyone hanging out in MDX House? Or fancy getting your face on TV? Join Pow Media to find out how to make all these things happen!
7. Spread the word
MDXSU is led by students, so it’s important that all students have an opportunity to get involved. If you are interested in making sure that the work of MDXSU is inclusive to all students, you can nominate yourself to be on the Democracy & Involvement Committee and lead initiatives that help others access all the good stuff we offer. Email Aadam Ali to find out more!
8. Oversee the work of a charity! (No, really…)
We have two student trustee positions available. Being a trustee is an incredibly important responsibility. All charities have them – they oversee our work and make high level decisions to ensure that we are operating legally and in a financially secure way.
This is an incredible experience that not many students have and of course, we’ll give you some brilliant training! Email Sophie McKay to find out more...
