This is the first blog post of the year from Katie Dragomirova, your Vice President Business and Law 2016/17.
Ladies and gentlemen… what you are about to witness is a behind-the-scenes blog of a Student Union Vice President and recent International Politics graduate who loves democracy, pizza and student's rights!
Let me first start off by saying that I didn’t know how to begin this blog, but then I came across this quote on my Instagram feed:
‘We are all capable of so much more than we think. And yet, most people never scratch the surface of what they’re capable of.’
This quote is so important to remember as a student, whether you're just starting or coming to the end of your time here. You are capable of achieving so much during your time at Middlesex University, both on your course and through pursuing passions outside the classroom, and as a Vice President at Middlesex Students' Union I'll be helping you to do that.
It's my job to represent and empower you as students - in the Business and Law School and more widely - and help you to have the best university experience, whether that's helping you find new hobbies, build grassroots campaigns or get the best internships.
While I wanted to take this opportunity to say hello to students in all years - especially those in the Schools I represent - and let you know my plans for the year ahead, I especially want to welcome all the new students who will be joining Middlesex this September.
Congratulations on getting accepted and I hope you're excited to begin a new chapter of your life!
Whether you're a new student or a returner, here's my easy recipe for success for the new year:
If the final point is the one which has you excited, one easy and quick way to do that is meet me and have a chat about what I’m going to do next year!
I’ll be working really hard on protecting the rights of students to welfare. Do you think it’s fair that women have to pay for tampons which are taxed as luxury items, when Jaffa Cakes are taxed as essential items? Me neither! Although I really like biscuits, I definitely like equality more, and will work on getting free sanitary items on our campus. Email me or message me on Facebook if you want to join the campaign, or join the MDXSU Women's Assembly to get involved in other campaigns around women and equality issues.
I will also be looking at the costs of being a student and how expensive housing is! Especially in student Halls of Residence, the standards of which have to be increased to meet the price we are paying. We're excited to announce that for the first time ever, students will be electing Halls Reps for each Halls of Residence this year, which will help us gather feedback from students in halls.
I am also hoping to increase the number of internship opportunities for our students, both on campus and in the local community, ensuring students leave university with the necessary skills to be employed.
My mission this year is to help you reclaim your energy, build on your dream job and sharpen your intuition! You are all superheroes and do not forget - together everything is possible and the best is yet to come!
