As we celebrate Women's History Month, it's essential to recognise the voices of women who are driving change in higher education today. Women have long fought for equality in academic spaces, and their leadership continues to shape policies, challenge discrimination, and push for a more inclusive future.

Our incredible Education Officer, Mihita Parekh, recently delivered a deeply moving speech at WonkHE that resonated with students and policymakers alike.

Sharing her personal journey as an international student, Mihita shed light on the challenges many face when adjusting to life abroad, especially when it comes to feeling truly welcomed and included.

In her speech, Mihita reflected on the high expectations she had when arriving in the UK, only to encounter a reality that didn’t match the promises made to her. As an international student, she faced feelings of isolation and discrimination, finding it difficult to navigate a new culture that felt unwelcoming at times. Rather than letting these experiences define her, Mihita found her place through leadership roles within the Students’ Union, proving that belonging is something you build, not wait for.

Her speech also touched on broader systemic issues, particularly the challenges faced by women, people of colour, and international students in academic spaces. Mihita called for more than just words of inclusivity; she urged for actionable change and highlighted the importance of allyship, encouraging those with privilege to support gender equality and challenge harmful stereotypes in everyday life.

Mihita’s closing words were a powerful reminder that belonging is right, not a privilege. Her call to action was a reminder for all of us to work together to create an inclusive environment where every student feels supported, valued, and empowered.

Mihita’s speech at WonkHe is a testament to the strength of student leadership in creating meaningful change. We are proud to have her as our Education Officer, standing up for the voices of all students.
