Our amazing Education Officer, Mihita Parekh, delivered an impactful speech at the APPG for Students, highlighting the profound impact of guarantor requirements on international students.
Mihita’s speech addressed a pressing issue faced by countless international students: the challenge of securing housing without a UK-based guarantor.
Referring to MPs Lord and student leaders, Mihita shared moving personal stories, including that of a student who faced financial and emotional challenges, explaining how these requirements create barriers, contributing to systemic inequality and isolation. This not only affects students’ ability to secure safe accommodation but also impacts their academic performance and overall well-being.
By bringing these experiences to the forefront, Mihita shed a light on an issue often overlooked in housing policy discussions. Her call to action emphasized the need for fairer housing practices, advocating for solutions that ensure all students (regardless of background) feel welcomed and supported. Her powerful words resonated with student leaders and policymakers, urging them to reconsider the implications of current guarantor policies.
This advocacy is a testament to the vital role student officers play in driving meaningful change.
