By MDXSU Vice President Orla Hillary
Throughout my time at Middlesex I have been involved with sport. Joining sports teams has allowed me to meet some wonderful people and make some amazing friendships, and is something I think everyone should give a go.
Unfortunately lots of students are prevented from playing sport, volunteering or working due to their timetables. While most universities give their students Wednesday afternoons free from lectures for co-curricular activities, this isn't the case at Middlesex.
For the above reasons - and after lots of requests from students - on 1st October 2015 I started the Keep Wednesday Afternoons Free campaign. I set myself a deadline of one month to see what the students thought of the campaign, and now, a month later, have been amazed by the response. We've had almost 350 likes on our Facebook page, plus a staggering 3,557 signatures in favour of the campaign - not including those on our online petition!
So what happens next? I'm going to present the petition and your signatures to the university, showing them how much students want Wednesday afternoons to themselves to choose what to do with their time - whether it's volunteer, represent the university by playing sports or working part time. I want students to genuinely feel valued in the university and have their opinions and their voices listened to.
