Middlesex students have consistently highlighted the need for better quality and better value food here on campus in recent years, leading MDXSU to rank it as a top priority for campaign action. After identifying where the campus food provision falls short in comparison with other institutions and highlighting these findings at months of top level meetings, we are delighted to be able to announce the following major improvements!

1. Hot water fee dropped

The 80p charge for a cup of hot water has now been dropped entirely. Last year the student newspaper ran a front-page campaign against this 80p charge, leading to a reduction to 50p – and now we have achieved our goal of making hot water completely free to Middlesex students across all campus outlets.

2. Cheaper fruit

The link between eating nutritious food and a strong immune system means that students who eat healthily are better able to focus on their studies even during times of stress. Our calls for cheaper healthy options means that fresh fruit available from campus cafes will go from costing 45p per piece to 30p – a price drop of 33%.

3. More Halal options

Middlesex students have diverse dietary requirements and our online survey revealed that a majority of students want more Halal options on campus. We’re therefore delighted to announce that both Ni Hao and Wrap Chic will be solely Halal from this year on.

These wins build upon our success with introducing the low cost Quids counter in 2013 and represent just a few of our proposed improvements.

The next steps in our campaign will focus on pushing for a fresh veg stall on campus and maintaining a downward pressure on costs; to learn more about these initiatives and contribute to achieving further change please email MDXSU’s President, Aman at A.Siddiqi@mdx.ac.uk!
